Port Blair to Baratang – 3 Step Journey through 100 km.
The stretch can be measured in about a little more than an hour by car. The state bus takes about 1.5 hours. The 6 a.m. convoy takes you through the Jarawa Forest Reserve. Please refrain from interacting with them, giving them food, gifts or even clicking their pictures is NOT allowed. Such activities can attract fines and even imprisonment.
Port Blair to Jirketang:
This is more or less 46 km by road. All vehicles that register before quarter to six a.m., are allowed to join the convoy which is led by a state bus with armed forest guards on board. Along with a temple, there are a few food joints that sell idli/vada/tea/coffee for tourists.
Jirketang to Middle Straits:
47 km through Jarawa Reserve Forest Area. This is applicable only for convoys that leave at 6 and 9 in the morning and 12 and 3 at noon. One notable point is that two-wheelers are prohibited.
Middle Straits to Baratang or Neelambar Jetty:
The forest stretch guides to a jetty. From here, there are regular ships to Baratang Island. It’s a 10-minute ride costing 10 rupees per head and is enormous. And there you go, you’ve reached Baratang.
