Elephant Beach, located in the remote area of Swaraj Dweep, is a popular water sports paradise in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. With its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal blue water, it offers a variety of water sports activities such as sea walking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass bottom boat excursions. The beach is situated in deep tropical woods, surrounded by large trees and foliage.
Elephant Beach is a popular destination for adventurers due to its diverse selection of water sports activities. The medium and vigorous waves make it an ideal spot for Jet Skiing, Kayaking, Speed Boats, Banana, and Sofa Boat Rides. The pure sea provides a wide-ranging underwater vista, and the corals and undersea richness in the deeper waters are unparalleled. The mix of hard and soft corals in Swaraj Dweep houses colorful fish, making it an ideal spot for activities such as Sea Walks, Glass Bottom Boats, and Snorkeling.
How to Reach Elephant Beach?
There are two methods to get to Elephant Beach: via walking through the bush or by ferry/boat. The majority of people that visit the islands choose to get there by boat.
Ferries and boats to Elephant Beach are accessible everyday between 8 AM and 12 PM. The boat departs from the ferry ghat at the Havelock jetty and arrives at the beach in 20 minutes or less, traveling a distance of 9 kilometers. Tickets are ₹1,050 ($15) per person for adults and free for children under 3 years old, depending on the boat/ferry. The ticket can be booked online or bargained on the place on the jetty.
There are several sellers on the left side of the jetty, along the coastline. The view from the boat is breathtaking as it moves through the water near the lagoons. Most ferry operators include free snorkeling with your trip, so check with them before leaving the dock. This is the most convenient route to go to the beach and is utilized by both visitors and residents wishing to explore the area.
Trekking
Locals enjoy trekking to reach the beach, while tourists avoid it owing to the extra work required. Aside from that, there are no official routes or walkways leading to the shore. The walking trail to the beach is about 8.6 kilometers from the Havelock Jetty and may be accessed by bus (₹10, $0.14) or cab (₹700, $10). A big sign stating “Way to Elephant Beach” on the right side of the road marks the starting point.
The journey itself is over 2 kilometers long and takes you into the lush jungle of Swaraj Dweep. The route is muddy and narrow, occasionally pushed by branches and vegetation. It is recommended to hire a guide with you on your journey. Another thing to keep in mind is that mosquitoes in the region are active even in broad daylight, so bring a repellent and wear boots for extra protection against crawlers.
The greatest time to visit the beach is year-round, as the weather is typically clear. The most popular time is between November and February. During this period, the weather is typically bright, which is ideal for water activities. Furthermore, the trip to the beach is enjoyable because the waves are not as rough at this time.
You should avoid organizing a trip here during the rainy season because most water activities are unavailable and the boat ride to the beach is unpredictable.
It is generally recommended to visit the beach between 10 AM and 3 PM, since most water sports merchants and kiosks are open by this time, and you will have ample hours to enjoy the overall experience.
