Cellular Jail :

The historical place “Kalaa Paani” or the Cellular Jail located in Port Blair was used by the British to deport the political prisoners in between 1896-1096. The monument had seven wings and a tower at the intersection point which was used by the guards to keep an eye on the jail inmates. Each wing had three stories and it was designed based on Jeremy Bentham’s idea of Panopticon. There were around 696 cells each of 4.5 by 2.7 metres (14.8 feet × 8.9 feet) in size with a ventilator located at about a height of 3 metres (9.8 ft). It was named Cellular Jail keeping in mind the solitary or lonely nature of the cells which prevented any sort of communication from one cell to another. The other unconventional component of the correctional facility was the way that each wing was limited into its own. Each wing was composed such that the front of one wing confronted the back of the other, subsequently, halting any type of conversation between the convicts. Some eminent personalities imprisoned here during India’s freedom struggle were Fazl-e-Haq KhairabadiYogendra ShuklaBatukeshwar DuttMaulana AhmadullahMovli Abdul Rahim SadiqpuriMaulvi Liaquat AliBabarao SavarkarVinayak Damodar SavarkarSachindra Nath SanyalBhai ParmanandShadan Chandra ChatterjeeSohan SinghSubodh RoyVaman Rao Joshi and Nand Gopal amongst many others. In those days when commuting was not so convenient these isolated islands located far away were considered to be an apt place for the prison. The prisoners were treated inhumanly which was brought to the notice of the British Government when 33 prisoners went on a hunger strike to protest the way the inmates were treated there.

The Japanese invaded the Andaman and Nicobar Islands amid the World War II from 23rd March 1942 to 7th October 1945. They put to death a huge number of individuals in the most torturous ways possible if they were associated with the British. A large number of people who were suspected as speculated spies were kept in the Cellular Jail and were later shot dead. Numerous were buried together in a mass grave. The Humfraygunj Martyrs’ Memorial today remains as a silent observer to the brutal treatment the natives of Andaman underwent. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose went to the islands as Head of the Provisional Government of India on 29th December 1943. Amid his three days on the islands, he went by the Cellular Jail and paused the punishment of inmates without appropriate trial. Netaji raised tricolor banner of India at Andaman and christened the Andaman and the Nicobar Islands as “Swaraj” and “Shaheed” Dweep separately.

The experience of Cellular Jail is phenomenal and one of a kind. It is definitely one of a kind experience. A cherished heritage site is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. It brings alive the saga of the freedom struggle and makes us imagine the sacrifice and the immense pain our Freedom Fighters underwent to achieve independence for our country. It is for sure worth a visit. Moreover Andaman Emerald Holidays provides attractive and pocket friendly tour packages. Now only 3 wings stand after independence, rest 4 were demolished during various times. Today this monument stands as a symbol narrating the torture and the inhuman behaviour which was borne by the inmates of the prison. Apart from the historic importance this place now hosts a light and sound show. This jail is now a centre of attraction for history lovers which now has become a museum and an art gallery. In the ground floor at the entrance there is an Exhibition Gallery which displays photos of Freedom Fighters. The 1st Floor has a dedicated library about Indian Independence and a few art galleries one of them is dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. An eternal flame of Freedom -Swatantrya Jyot has been constructed in the area of the Cellular Jail to commemorate the martyrs and the Indian Freedom fighters.

Cellular Jail is located at a distance of approximately 8 Km from the main city of Port Blair. Cabs and public transport is easily available.

The Cellular Jail is open to visitors during the following timings:-

HAVELOCK ISLAND :

Have you ever imagined about a dream trip to the heavens? Havelock is here to sweep you off your feet with its beauty. Its nothing less than heaven and it defines perfection. With heavenly luxurious beaches, twinkling blue-green shallows and one of the best diving destinations of South Asia, Havelock has the merited stand-out of being an explorer’s heaven. It draws in the majority of the tourists and captivates them to spend the entire vacation here. It is a visual treat as it has got a picturesque outline. For the ones who are looking for a hustle-free, soulful and peaceful vacation, minus the mobile phones, internet, daily chores, office and the usual mundane beaches, Havelock Island will be the absolute favorite to tick off the travel checklist.

History of Heavenly Havelock – Havelock Island has got its name from British General, Sir Henry Havelock, who served in India. The government of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, has allowed and encouraged advancement of tourism in Havelock, with an attention on advancing eco-tourism. Havelock Island stayed away from a significant part of the destruction by the 2004 Indian Ocean seismic tremor and tsunami and there was no life loss. The island exists in the Ritchie’s Archipelago. It is at a distance of 69.6 km from Port Blair.

Attractions of Havelock – The Havelock Island itself is an attraction for the tourists. It holds a huge treasure for whoever is planning for an Andaman trip, alongside the excellent sandy beaches bordered with a green shelter of the rain-nourished forests which calls out to everybody to appreciate the cobalt sea. The different stunning attractions of Havelock are Neil Island, Radhanagar Beach, Elephant Beach, Barren Island, Vijaynagar Beach, Bharatpur Beach, Kala Pathar Beach, Lalaji Bay Beach, Laxmanpur Beach and the Guitar Island Beach. The long sandy beaches are the significant fascination on the island and the savoring nature underpins it all through. The beauty of the unblemished nature here surpasses everything else.

A small island situated toward the south of Andaman is Neil Island, overflowing with less investigated marine variety, coral reefs, and long beaches and entrancing greenery. Neil Island is named as the vegetable bowl of Andaman. A standout amongst the most bewitching marvels in Andaman with a lot of visitors visiting it consistently, Radhanagar Beach is the pearl of Havelock Island. A tranquil shoreline with unadulterated quietness and pure vibe will offer the guests a calming song and that would be the ideal time to unwind, to stroll around with your loved ones or just sunbathe. The unrivaled dynamic volcano of South East Asia is on Barren Island. The consistent touch of the sapphire blue water on the pearl sandy beach of Vijaynagar makes no sound and it is one reason why travelers have picked it as the ideal space for romantic getaways. Early morning visit to the beach of Bharatpur will influence you to delight in the heavenly dawn sees when the beach gets showered in multi-shades from the sun and the sight is incredibly overwhelming. The entire Kala Pathar beach is significantly lined by thick greenery and one critical fact about the Kala Pathar is that it is relatively quiet and more often very less number of individuals will wander around and that might be the motivation behind why it captures every guests’ heart. The perfect Lalaji Bay shoreline is very reasonable for beach hopping or strolling for an invigorating and reviving mind. Nearly a quiet beach on Neil Island is Laxmanpur Beach which is eclipsing each other on the island as far as magnificence and bewitching appeal is concerned. One of the noteworthy yet less investigated islands in Andaman is Guitar Island and there is an intriguing explanation for its strange name. The shape of a guitar is plainly drawn by the island and this island gets associated with the neighboring island amid low tides.
